4. Develop team capability

Key ideas

  • Successful managers build and lead an effective team so each member is fully committed to and capable of moving in the direction set.
  • Successful managers create opportunities to coach team members on how to be more effective.

Overview

Coaching and development of team members follows naturally from effective task assignment and completion. While monitoring and reviewing work the manager creates opportunities to coach team members on how to be more effective. This may involve helping a team member to see better ways to solve problems, run meetings, collaborate with others, comply with policies and better use the company's resources.

The Leadership FrameworkCoaching and development of team members is part of the performance management sequence of work. Each part of this sequence has a different emphasis with the same goal of having roles filled with people who can do the work of the role effectively. When done well, it allows team members to be effective and be satisfied with their work. It helps build strong manager-employee working relationships.
